knitting isn't so safe

So I was knitting a sock on double point aluminum needles (size 1 -about ball point pen tip size) and when you knit a sock you form a triangle with the three needles and knit with a fourth. At any time while you're knitting, one of the needles is pointed straight up and at you. I leaned over quickly to retrieve my daughter's all important dropped toy and the bottom of the needle hit the tabletop in front of me and the top of the needle went about 3/4" into my chin.

First I thought that I'd just hit my face on the table.
Then I had to pull the needle out.
Then I had to lay on the floor because I was totally queasy.
And THEN I had to pick up all the dropped stitches and finish the damn sock.

Pointy metal, extreme preoccupation, Safety THIRD.

Buttergirl watch out, I know you're a knitter!

Please tell me you didn't waste the hole and you put some kind of stud or ring in it.

I perforated the bottom of my chin. I think I managed to hit the only spot that a stud wouldn't work. Half an inch higher, and yes, I probably would have. I was worried that I was going to have a puncture wound infection, but it healed right up!
  • Crochet isn't so safe, either!

I finally got permission to post this, as it isn't my story.

See this picture for the fabulous x-ray:

    And now the story:
    ---
Yes, that’s my hand. Yes, that is a crochet hook (size 12, Boye, they’re pointy!). No, liquor was not involved. See entire story below if you dare!

I am a seamstress, I do bridal alterations for my daily bread. I rip out a lot of seams on delicate fabrics and use a small steel crochet hook to get under the stitches. I was working on this huge tulle-skirted number and dropped the crochet hook.

Thinking ” if that gets lost in there I’ll have a hell of a time getting it out”, I dove for it, and for an instant, it was point up and hit my thigh as I drove my hand down onto it. Call it bad timing or just bad luck. It went in like a hot knife through butter.

For a second I thought it was just under the skin of my palm, but then I realized it was in up to the wide flat part of the handle. Deeeeeeep. My daughter drove me to the E.R. while I hid it from her horrified gaze with a hankie. I had to wait for an hour while they found a hand surgeon to consult.

I tell ya, it was more painful than childbirth when the whole hand started to spasm around the damn thing.

The point was just under the skin on the back of my hand, between my thumb and forefinger, the thick muscled part. They incised the skin, nipped off the hook and pulled it out. It healed up very cleanly and really didn’t hurt after the first night. Great X-ray though!!

I have the crochet hook taped to the x-ray envelope. I have toyed with the idea of displaying it at the bridal shop I work for so I can point to it when brides want to know why it takes so long or costs so much to get their dress altered.
    ---

thanks to the lovely and talented Tracy for the pic and permission to re-run her story.
