Okay, last year I discovered this beautifully bad idea while wandering around on the playa, and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a few scars. The whole thing started with a last-minute decision to bring one of my old pairs of roller blades to Burning Man on the off-chance that they might be somehow usable and, upon arriving, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they actually worked quite well. Occasionally I would have to step through some softer areas near the outhouses, but most of the time they were great, and I had a lot of fun rolling around Black Rock City and cruising the theme camps.
Then, I found some rope that I had brought. Add this rope to aforementioned roller blades, throw in the back hitch of a willing art car, have them hit the gas pedal, and you get what I fondly refer to as Playa Roller Skiing. I ate shit eventually, and when going particularly fast this can hurt a lot, but it was so fun that I intend to get a pair of Skikes (crazy off-road roller blades with inflatable tires...Google them!) to try this again at the next Burn. Just thought that I would let everyone know because, seriously now, it is a fucking blast. Try it!

Re: Playa Roller Skiing
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 11:07 PMHurm... This reminds me of wanting to work on the electromagnetic harpoon idea that I got from reading Snow Crash oh-so-long ago... First, a set of rollerblades we can modify to use 150cm wheels, two per skate... Then 20 feet of extension cord, 20 feet of steel cable, a big-assed coil of copper, and a backpack full of batteries.
If you were well practiced, you could probably sling-shot off cars quite effectively, but that said, if you were interisted in doing things right, you'd probably be somewhere else, instead of here, where alcohol is still good for concussions.
right guys? Right? hey. wake up... -

Re: Playa Roller Skiing
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 2:08 PMSpeakin of. Do you think there is a chance I can modify strap on skates? That way I can walk or roll. If I can do this, It will so change the way I light them up for nights.:) -

Re: Playa Roller Skiing
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 2:12 PMAnother thought that I had was,,,,,,,,they make tracks for the remote controlled cars. I am wondering if I cant modify a pair of inline skates or possibly regular skates with either wheels or tracks,,depending on the condition of the playa....:) What does anyone think? -

Can you ride a skateboard?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 2:24 PMtinyurl.com/q5ww3
...seems they're looking for 'test pilots'.
Just in case you want to move from skates to skateboard.
Wonder if it could survive the playa? -

Re: Can you ride a skateboard?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 5:42 PMI tried to email them, but it does not go through. Gonna try snail mail, however, it is to australia. I wanted to ask would it survive the Playa and was going to ask how fast, but I am thinking 130 is cool. Way worth the bone breakage. Ha,,will need to wear leather to keep my parts attached if something goes wrong.:)
Thanks by the way, that simply rocks and I wonder when we will be able to get them. The second generation is being manufactured in germany. hhhhmmmmm,,,,,I cant wait to get an answer.:) -

Re: Can you ride a skateboard?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 6:00 PMWe towed one of these behind my boat out on the open Playa
www.mtbz.com/ground_indu...rodigy87.htm
And continued towing when someone fell off and was to stupid to let go of the roap !!
Good fun all week and other than replacing the bearings for 2008 it held up well.

Re: Can you ride a skateboard?
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 3:00 PMYou know? I am wondering how fast and how much space we would need for an art car to boost someone in a parachute. LOL Now that would be fun....you would need a wench with about 200 feet of good solid cable on the art car. it would also have to have a safety lock and maybe a hydraulic pull in mechanism,,,,,,LOL Yea, i know,,,,I have a feeling I will be in here after BM with another Darwin commemoritive plaque moment..:) If not a Darwin award.LOL -

Re: Can you ride a skateboard?
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 6:58 PMLynn, you so crazeee!!!
I just spent 20 minutes on the Skikes site, mighty tempting for local use, since who knows if I'll ever get to BM any year...
Damn this weak US Dollar, close to 500 bucks for the 'starter bundle' nevermind the better ones. I'll have to pass for now, but they sure look like fun! -

Re: Can you ride a skateboard?
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 3:19 PMWe are burners Pocahontas.:) We can modify, make do, make work and make bigger and better.:) If we cant, we usually know somone who can. Usually for about half the cost as well.:) If that.:) What is the bestest of all, is that we are crazy enough, daring enough and creative enough to make anything work. -
